Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. But her parents would not allow her to act until she was an adult because of the negative effects that stress could be able to have on their daughter. Perry acknowledged that she was not comfortable acting in high school, but started performing as a means to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry her back home California and theater roles were in demand. She appeared on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. Also, she was cast on The CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. Despite having a family connection to the character she received the part through an audition.
