On 21 March 2012 Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat spoke at a news conference that Coleman would play the Doctor's companion alongside Matt Smith after Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have left the show. Moffat has chosen her for the role because she proved to be the most effective with Smith and could speak faster than him.
